INHS Herpetology Collection Database

The Illinois Natural History Survey Herpetology Collection Database provides access to more than 50,000 specimen records representing over 900 species from Illinois and around the world. This searchable database provides access to detailed specimen data for research and education.

Non-INHS Illinois Herps Database

This database provides access to over 25,000 Illinois amphibian and reptile records from the former University of Illinois Museum of Natural History collection. These specimens, first catalogued by Hobart Smith and later transferred to INHS in 1997, remain a valuable record of amphibians and reptiles in Illinois.

History of Illinois Herpetology

This essay, compiled by Emerius Curator Christopher A. Phillips, traces the history of amphibian and reptile research in Illinois. It covers early accounts, key publications, and major contributors, offering a detailed record of how herpetology has developed in the state.
